USDA Funds Project for More Cost Effective Production of Crickets as a Sustainable Protein Source

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) began funding research into trash-fed crickets as an alternative to conventional and “unsustainable” protein production in July 2023, according to a federal grant listing.

The $130,000 grant was awarded to Mighty Cricket, LLC a company that currently sells cricket flour, cricket protein powder, and cricket oatmeal.

The grant listing claims that the demand for bug protein has increased in recent years due to “public awareness of the need for more sustainable food sources.”

According to the grant description, "food is the largest component of municipal landfill waste, accounting for an average of 22%. This food waste creates a huge opportunity for Mighty Cricket to procure cricket feed at a lower cost than what is available on the market."
